Do I have to “tell all”?
Therapy is a personal growth process and does
not have one “right” way. Clients share their
personal information at their own pace. I
strongly believe that each therapeutic
experience needs to be highly individualized and
the client is valued as an active participant in
the therapeutic process. |

What does a therapy session “look like”?
The first session involves a discussion as to
what brings the client to therapy at this time.
There is also a discussion of contract
agreements and confidentiality. Initial
paperwork is reviewed. It is important for
clients to feel comfortable so that a
therapeutic relationship can grow. Plans are
made for on-going therapeutic sessions. |

When is it time to seek help?
It is a personal decision as to when an
individual or family seeks treatment. In
general, clients seek counseling when they feel
stuck, isolated, overwhelmed, or need an outside
unbiased person to assist them to work through
certain life difficulties. For children, any
significant sudden change in their behavior
needs to be carefully assessed. Typical distress
symptoms for adults and children can include:
- Significant changes in affect (sadness,
anxiety, dependence, anger, etc.)
- Distress and conflict with
peers/colleagues
- Sudden change in coping skills
- Unusual drop in school grades or work
performance
- Changes in sleep patterns, appetite,
sexual activity
- Escalated arguing within the family
- Nightmares
- Experimentation or use of drugs/alcohol

Should I use my insurance?
This is a personal choice. Therapy can be an
expensive process and it may be less expensive
to use your insurance benefits. However,
insurance companies place limitations upon the
therapeutic process. Insurance usually limit the
number of sessions and the types of treatments
that are allowed under the client’s benefit
plan. There are also a variety of ways that
therapy can be privately financed, for example,
paying for a block of sessions at a reduced
rate. Please ask me about specialized financial
arrangements.
I currently accept insurance from Blue Cross,
Blue Shield, TriCare (TriWest), Victims of
Crime, Sonoma County Health and Human Services,
and other various PPO and EAP plans. |

What is HIPAA?
TThe Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act of 1996 ("HIPAA") was passed
by Congress to promote standardization and
efficiency in the health care industry. HIPAA
will accomplish these goals by imposing new
restrictions on how covered entities can use and
share information and by creating new rights for
individuals concerning their health information.
HIPAA seeks to help health care providers do
business with health plans in less costly and
more efficient ways, and it seeks to give
patients more rights and control over their
health information.
